Steering Group's 'Art as Activism' collages

Since November last year, Sheffield’s LGBTQ+ Young People's Steering Group (facilitated by SAYiT) has been meeting regularly to share their thoughts on key issues affecting them.

So far, we’ve met with a local schools representative to discuss experiences and policies in educational settings, Sexual Health Sheffield to consult on their trans and non-binary fact-sheet, and Sheffield Council’s Youth Voice & Influence team. As well as meeting new people and connecting with local workers, the young people have had space to develop and articulate their opinions and home in on the issues they care about.

For the last two sessions, we’ve been getting crafty! We’ve created a series of collages based on the theme ‘Art as Activism’, chosen to reflect the role that art has played in advancing LGBTQ+ rights over the last few decades in particular.

Use the arrows to see all four images!

I’m sure you’ll all agree, there are some true masterpieces here! From hilarious riffs on the Chappell Roan ‘Hot To Go’ TikTok dance, to powerful artworks about gender euphoria, trans liberation and reproductive justice, these collages pack a real punch.

If you’re interested in hearing more from the Steering Group, stay tuned - next month, we’ll be joined by the wonderful team at Proud Changemakers to produce a super special podcast in which Sheffield's LGBTQ+ youth speak out about queer joy, the struggles they face, and the ways that local decision-makers could make genuine, lasting change.
