Why we've paused our Comets group (and what we're doing instead)

We wanted to share a little update on our Comets group - the space we usually run for 8-10 year olds. After some careful thinking, we've decided to pause it. This wasn't an easy call to make, because we really believe in the importance of reaching this age group. But here's what's happening, and why we're excited about what's next.

Instead of running the group as usual, we've shifted our focus to primary school outreach. We've developed a new strategy (shoutout to Excel spreadsheets) and we're starting to connect with primary schools across Sheffield - one by one - offering support that fits their ethos and needs.

We know that right now, teaching children about LGBTQ+ inclusion can feel like tricky ground for some schools. So, we're meeting people where they're at. Our assemblies and resources centre around kindness, empathy, and respect - values that every school can get behind. It's all about starting conversations and helping young people build a foundation of care and understanding they'll carry with them.

Why this age group matters so much to us

The referrals we've had into Comets so far have come from children who already have BIG questions - about identity, themselves, and the world around them. And we're absolutely sure they're not the only ones in our vibrant Sheffield city asking those same things.

Our early experiences and the representation we do (or don't) see at that age shape so much of who we are, and how accepting we learn to be of ourselves and others. That is why we care so deeply about creating safe, affirming spaces for children in this age group. They deserve to feel seen, heard, and supported from the start.

We're aiming to relaunch Comets in September, and we'd love to hear from anyone who might be interested. Whether you're a parent, carer, teacher, or someone who knows a young person who could benefit - drop us a message at info@sayit.org.uk
