Sheffield LGBT+ History Month 2017 Celebrate Weekend

February 25, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 10:30 pm

A Weekend of Events to Celebrate LGBT+ History Month 2017

Sheena Amos Youth Trust (SAYiT) and Friends of Edward Carpenter (FOEC) would like to welcome you to a weekend of events to celebrate Sheffield’s LGBT+ History Month, beginning with a grand opening at the Millennium Gallery at 12.00 noon on 25 February. This is a great opportunity to celebrate and reflect on LGBT+ history, as well as, marking the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England and Wales. The Woodhouse Prize Band will be there to entertain you as well as a tea and cake welcome.

The opening will then be followed by a number of free events:

  • Sally Goldsmith (Sheffield poet, author and song-maker) will be shining a light on razor grinder George Hukin – lover and comrade of the gay radical Victorian writer and political activist Edward Carpenter.
  • Mike Jackson (original member of Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM)) will consider the role of LGBT+ politics by examining the history of Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners, the LGBT+ activists that inspired the award-winning film Pride.
  • Claire Summerskill (writer, alternative stand-up, actor and performer) will consider the importance of LGBT+ Oral History, looking at a range of subjects relating to personal, social and political history.
  • Also there is an opportunity to delve in to past history, looking for clues, unearthing hidden meaning allowing a unique opportunity to consider your own LGBT+ history with local historian Suzanne Bingham.

A ticketed event on Saturday night has performances from a double bill of exceptional talent Grace Petrie and Claire Summerskill. This is a unique and unrepeatable concert and is sure to sell-out fast. Tickets can be purchased from www.cliffordevents.co.uk.

More events are happening on 26 February, we hope to see you there also!
